BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board has chosen a possible interim superintendent to fill the position when John Dilworth leaves next week.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board Thursday night appointed Carlos Sam as Interim Superintendent of the district. Sam was voted in with a 10 to 0 vote. School board president Barbara Freiberg chose not to vote.

"I humbly accept this recommendation as interim superintendent of East Baton Rouge schools," said Sam.

Sam is currently over the magnet and gifted and talented programs in EBR. Before that, he was a teacher and principal and has been with the school system for the past 23 years, but his appointment didn't come without opposition & a fire storm from the public.

"Worried about the future of EBR schools. Might not be no more EBR, may be all charter," said Hyma Moore Sr., a concerned citizen.

"Get some real business done because you all are not doing it. You all are selling our children down the river, and you know it," Carolyn McCullan, another concerned citizen.

"Draw this community back together because they are not together, and it's clear, neither are you," said former school board member Noel Hammatt.

That's because Herman Brister was the second in command directly under outgoing superintendent Dr. John Dilworth. Many felt, he should have been the next leader not only by default, but also by experience, but board members did not bring up a motion this time around for Brister.

"Everyone who has been a school board watcher, knows what the vote would be -- 5 to 6," said school board vice-president Tarvald Smith.

The board approved the move under the condition that Sam not apply for the job on a permanent basis.

Sam takes over February 24th.
