Tigers start 2012 season with weekend sweep

BATON ROUGE - LSU outscored its opposition, 33-2, over the weekend in posting two wins over Air Force and one victory over Alcorn State to open the 2012 season. The Tigers outscored their opponents, 20-1, in the first three innings of the three games

LSU recorded back-to-back shutouts over Alcorn State (19-0) and Air Force (4-0), marking the first time LSU posted consecutive shutouts since April 2008 when the Tigers blanked Centenary and Alabama.

LSU's three starting pitchers each turned in outstanding efforts over the weekend – sophomore right-hander Kevin Gausman defeated Air Force on Friday, limiting the Falcons to one run on four hits in six innings with two walks and seven strikeouts, sophomore right-hander Ryan Eades posted a win over Alcorn State Saturday, blanking the Braves in five innings of work while allowing one hit with one walk and a career-high eight strikeouts and sophomore right-hander Kurt McCune fired six shutout innings against Air Force on Sunday, allowing three hits with one walk and four strikeouts

As a staff, the LSU pitchers posted a 0.67 ERA in three games, allowing just two runs on 15 hits with a .155 opponent batting average

Three LSU hitters collected four hits over the weekend, including sophomore catcher Ty Ross (4-for-7, 2 RBI, 2 runs), sophomore outfielder Jackson Slaid (4-for-8, 1 double, 3 RBI, 2 runs) and junior outfielder Raph Rhymes (4-for-9, 2 RBI, 5 runs).

Junior first baseman/outfielder Mason Katz collected three hits, including a triple, and a team-best five RBI, and sophomore outfielder JaCoby Jones produced a double and four RBI

Freshman infielder/outfielder Jared Foster, a backup quarterback for the LSU football team last fall, was 2-for-5 at the plate over the weekend with a double, three RBI and one run.

Senior infielder Beau Didier blasted a solo homer Saturday in LSU's win over Alcorn State, the second HR of his career and his first since 2009, when he homered in his only at-bat of the season. 

LSU recorded a total attendance figure of 31,598 for its three games over the weekend, an average of 10,532 per contest.
